Social media marketing campaigns.

As the number of social media users continues to climb, many companies are looking beyond simply establishing a social presence — and are seeking to “get social media marketing right.” The prospect of free, yet effective viral marketing recommendations from consumer to consumer is very appealing — but often elusive.

Through an analysis of the success of 751 social media marketing campaigns involving Facebook apps, we investigated the social sharing mechanisms that encourage consumers to share information about a product with their friends. What we found is that there is no easy, one-size-fits-all solution for social media marketing. Instead, companies must tailor their social media marketing strategies to fit their products. In particular, useful products benefit from different social media marketing approaches than do fun products such as games.

On social media platforms such as Facebook, the design of the social sharing mechanism intended to encourage consumers to share viral messages is crucial. Consumers can learn about their friends’ interests in several ways: via publicly shared timeline messages, via direct private messages or from the “about” section of their friends’ personal profile pages. When designing the optimal social sharing mechanism for Facebook, managers must make four decisions:

Reach vs. Relevance

A social sharing mechanism can either rely on broadcast messages or target friends individually. Choosing one over the other involves trade-offs between greater reach on the one hand and higher relevance of the shared message on the other. The majority of the Facebook campaigns we studied favored broadcast messages (64%) over individual targeting (36%).

View Exhibit

Strangers vs. Friends

In social networks, most information sharing occurs between direct friends. On Facebook, consumers can also reach second-degree contacts with whom they have no direct connection through comments posted on their friends’ timelines. When designing a social sharing mechanism, managers must decide whether it should be targeted at friends or second-degree contacts who may be strangers. Whether recommendations from direct friends are always more influential than recommendations from strangers is an open question. However, of the Facebook campaigns we observed in our study, only 7% were aimed at strangers.

Avoiding the Pitfalls affiliate marketing

Businesses considering social coupon campaigns should make an effort to understand how and why coupons work, and how they can affect the economics of the business both in the short term and in the long term. We have developed some general guidelines that can help businesses identify and avoid the pitfalls of social coupon campaigns.

Use coupons to build broad relationships with new customers. Businesses typically think of social coupon launches in terms of adding new customers. But at the three businesses we studied, the impact of new customers was decidedly mixed. Every new customer visiting the restaurant with the coupon resulted in a $14 decline in profits; for the car wash, the decline was $17; for the beauty salon, $39. One way for companies to mitigate such potential losses is to see customer visits as opportunities to up-sell or cross-sell other products or services. Although most customers buy coupons for a specific purpose and redeem them for particular products, there may be some opportunities to broaden the relationship. For example, a roofing contractor can try to cross-sell its gutter installation and cleaning services, and a massage studio can try to cross-sell health and wellness products. As much as possible, the decision to launch a social coupon campaign should be viewed as part of a broader business strategy rather than as a specific marketing tactic.

V. Kumar and B. Rajan, “Social Coupons as a Marketing Strategy: A Multifaceted Perspective,” Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science 40, no. 1 (2012): 120-136.

Be strategic about offering discounts. Customers purchase social coupons for their deep discounts. While the low price is an incentive for new customers to try out the product or service offering, many will expect to pay the same low price later on; in a competitive market, any price increase may be viewed as a reason to take their business elsewhere. There is a segment of consumers who buy items only when they are discounted, which obviously undermines profits.

Against this backdrop, businesses should think twice about how social coupons are designed and how the discount will be structured. Depending on what is feasible and practical, a business might decide to limit the number of coupons offered, restrict which categories of customers are eligible to use them (for example, only new customers) or offer a more modest discount rate. For example, following its initial coupon campaign, the ethnic restaurant we examined decided to experiment with a less generous offer. The new coupon was only good on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, their slowest days of the week; the discount was reduced to 30% from 50%; and a minimum purchase was required to make use of the offer. The early results of the second campaign have been promising: Losses in the month after the coupon launch decreased to almost zero (compared with the earlier loss of more than $7,300 in that month).

Guard against cannibalizing existing revenue. Given that the primary motive of launching a social coupon is to attract new customers, most businesses wouldn’t ordinarily want to encourage their existing customers to use discount coupons. Making coupons available to people currently paying full price damages profitability and encourages deal-seeking behavior.

One way to address this problem — and protect profit levels — is to provide social coupons to new customers only. When businesses restrict offers to new prospects, the chances of improving profitability are greatly increased. None of the three businesses we studied anticipated the negative impact of offering coupons to existing customers. As they saw it, with more customers signing up for the coupon, they would only benefit from the increased customer visits. However, we found that less can be more: A 1% reduction in the number of existing customers receiving coupons trimmed the beauty salon’s profit shortfall by $495; for the restaurant, the 1% reduction was worth $187; for the cash wash service, $224.

By changing the nature of the coupon deals, businesses can better control the number of new customers visiting them, the effect on profit margins of the discounted purchases and the number of existing customers taking advantage of the offer. How campaigns are calibrated can have tremendous implications for revenues and profits, both in the short term and over extended periods of time. Typically, the network effects of group buying are considered desirable. But unless managers are careful about how coupon programs are designed, network effects can become a negative force.

What We Found Coupon

In their current form, social coupons are not ideally suited to ensure customer acquisition and yield business profits. Although all three of the businesses we studied captured significant numbers of new customers with their coupon offers, each saw substantial losses during the month the coupon campaigns were launched, which in turn created significant financial burdens. In the case of the restaurant, the loss in the first month was more than $7,000; for the car wash service, it was $6,300, and for the spa it was $11,760. (See “How a Social Coupon Campaign Affected Three Businesses.”) Such losses would not have been so serious if the businesses were able to achieve higher revenues and increased profits in future months. However, this was not the case. Despite their best marketing efforts, the three businesses had difficulty retaining most of the new customers who were attracted to the coupon offers. Based on our analysis, it will take the car wash service and ethnic restaurant 15 and 18 months, respectively, to recover from the profit shortfall following the coupon launch; for the beauty salon and spa, the recovery period for the coupon campaign at current business levels was projected at more than 98 months, or eight years. Needless to say, extended recovery periods discourage businesses from initiating new coupon launches. Businesses that want to prevent social coupons from cannibalizing profits need to design their deals carefully so they aren’t giving too much away.

This is a lovely little edition of one of Tolstoy’s greatest short works.

Towards the end of his life, Tolstoy increasingly worked in a much smaller compass than his familiar great realist novels, in which the writer’s great strengths at expansion, dilation and detail are hard at work. But in these smaller works–novellas, if you wanna be technical–you find every bit as much precision, but condensed and then arranged like a fantastic puzzle.

THE FORGED COUPON is about Christianity, make no doubt. And it’s part of Tolstoy’s famous critique of the church as he knew it. But THE FORGED COUPON is not about a supernatural Christianity: it’s about Christ’s moral teachings and the psychological and social impact they could have, were they understood “properly”–at least by LT’s lights.

So Tolstoy imagines–with his super-human imaginative power, feeling for every class and profession of Russia’s enormous social landscape–the exact impact a simple teaching like “love others as thyself” (which is not narrowly Christian: it’s bedrock for a number of religions) could have on particular individuals and on a society as a whole.

You must chalk it up to Tolstoy’s genius that one of those individuals is a serial killer, another a Prince, another an emperor, another a legless tailor, etc.

And so psychology, ethics and social thought all merge in an imaginative work that is as simple and complex as a flower or a garden.

As for the edition, the font is nice, the pages well laid out, and the introductory material is not at all bad, it’s very fine, as far as it goes. But you should really read the novella first, and then you can look at the rest. It’s all a footnote.

Hell, we’re all a footnote to someone like Tolstoy, eh

Another book I read while studying movie adaptation (coupled later on with Robert Bresson’s L’argent), Tolstoy’s story is a study of human relations as defined through money. The first half of the novella concentrates on a “chain of deals” that eventually ends up in murder; the second half (non-existent in Bresson’s work, therefore making it more pessimistic) starts with the redemption of said murderder, and then the chain of deals works all the way back to the original scenario, where history seems bound to repeat itself in a naturalistic cycle

Urthbox Subscription Box Review

Each month you will receive healthy full size products that must pass strict ingredient, sourcing, calorie, nutrition and manufacturing standards. The Review With Urthbox (pronounced earth), it’s all about healthy non-GMO, organic and all natural products. Each month you will receive any combination of  food, beverages, snacks, or personal care product. You can choose from classic, gluten-free, vegan, or diet box options. Choices include one month, three month, or six month subscriptions. In the January box I received nine products, plus one extra goodie Reed’s Original Ginger candy chews. Here is a short video of me unpacking my UrthBox.

Since it was already unwrapped, the Wow Baking Cookie Oregon Oatmeal was shared first. It didn’t have raisins after all,  but it was plumb full of cranberries and apricots and other wholesome ingredients. It was a filling and delicious take on a classic cookie.

Annie’s Naturals: Organic Horseradish Mustard was a welcome addition to our fridge. We eat a great deal of mustard as most ketchups are loaded with high-fructose corn syrup. The horseradish in this brand was not overpowering, but had enough kick to make it tantalizing.

Dang Toasted Coconut Chips was an absolutely delectable surprise to me. Ingredient list? Coconut, sugar and salt. I do not know how they make this crispy goodness taste so good, but they are addictive. I refused to share. I just made promises that I would get the kid their own bag. Maybe…I can see using the coconut chips in parfaits, on top of a smoothie, or even mixed into a bread crumb coating. They were my favorite item in the box.

Annie Chun’s Rice Express Sticky White Rice  is something I have eaten before. It tastes good and is easy to prepare. I decided to pair the rice along with the Tasty Bite Jaipur Vegetables.Whew! Talk about spicy, but I loved it. This is a nice shelf stable product, does not taste like packaged food, and the ingredient list is very short.
There was only one beverage in the box, a Neo Organic Super Energy Drink. I do not normally drink energy drinks because of the high caffeine which can be problematic for me.  This brand offers the boost of an energy drink without the health woes. My husband sampled it for me and gave it a high rating, saying it had a fruity flavor. I took a small taste and also enjoyed the flavor.

Inka Crops Inka Corn – Salt and Vinegar were opened next.Corn nuts have never been on my snack circuit, but I tried these with an open mind.  I have to say they were very bland. Crunchy yes, but tasteless.

As I mentioned in the video Justin’s Nut Butter Almond Butter has had prime shelf space in our kitchen cabinets. It is not as smooth as store brought processed peanut butter, but that is not an issue. Rich flavor abounds, and it is easy to use in recipes.

Most people enjoy nuts dredged in chocolate. If you are one of those choco-nut lovers, then you have to buy Next by Nature Dark Chocolate Cashews.I made one of my kids take them downstairs so I would not devour the bag in one sitting. Yummy.

This was a great crate of goodies, all of which were gluten-free. I loved the amount of items received, the variety and that they were full sized products. The shipping was super-fast which is a must for us snackaholics. Most of the items are available on Amazon and at Whole Foods.

What do you think of this subscription box?  Will you give it a whirl?

(p.s Make sure you get the Dang Toasted Coconut Chips. You can come back and thank me later.)

Pros and Cons

Urthbox provides a variety of  subscription options, and dietary choices. Also, since they average 9-10 products per box, the cost per item averages out to $2.50 -$2.75 each. I think that is very affordable. Just think, regular potato chips run over $3.00 a bag. Considering that all of the products are full size & healthier choices you will definitely get your money’s worth. Plus you will across wonderful new products to experience.

They offer referral points plus member discounts, so you can earn big loyalty points for every purchase. Those points are redeemable at the UrthBox Shop.

I have been wanting to offer my clients their very own photo app for a while now. What a great way to carry your photos with you wherever you go! Everyone has a cell phone nowadays, and 50% of those in the US are smartphones. You also all have iPads and other tablet devices to show off your gorgeousness!

So I’ve been on the fence about Stickyalbums for a while. While the concept is extremely appealing, the price point was just enough to make me hold off. Oh, I have been tempted, and even tried them out.

Enter – fantastic execution of a product that will benefit my clients, is easy to use, and at a price point that works for my business model.

After playing with both apps, and weighing the pros and cons, I have come to the conclusion that is a budget friendly option that delivers full functionality and results in a perfect product to offer clients!  I love how easy it is to set up the app, how simple it is to deliver to the client (awesome custom email is provided for you to

send) and that nothing detracts from beautifully showcasing your images.

I hope this info has been helpful!  I’m looking forward to offering this great product to my clients.

Review of Coupon Possible Binder

Coupon Binder Review

The biggest complaint I hear from couponers is that it can be difficult to get organized.  Sure, you can purchase a binder, tabs and baseball card sleeves, but that can add up quickly in cost and sometimes, can take too much work to do.  Enter — Coupon Possible Binder.  A solution to organizing all of your coupons!

I recently had an opportunity to review one of these binders.  I welcomed this chance to put it up against the binder I’ve been using for years (and years).  While what I have been using works for me, if there is another option out there, which might work even better, I am definitely interested in giving it a try.

The very first thing I noticed about the binder was the size.  Mine is a huge binder (regular size like kids would use at school).  This Coupon Possible Binder is much smaller.  In fact, it is only 8×10.  I was a little skeptical at first because it was so small.  I will freely admit that I actually like the size.  It is so much less cumbersome than my larger one.  It is more convenient to carry into the store.  In fact, my handbag is large enough that I can even stand it up inside of it!!

If you are use to a binder zipping closed, such as me, you may raise an eyebrow and think that this could be a problem.  I actually was hesitant for this reason because I do like mine to zip closed (usually because I slide additional blank pages into mine and my binder may pop open).  I did use this without any problems of my coupons falling out nor the binder popping open. You will want to keep that in mind before you purchase (so you aren’t surprised when it arrives).

When I opened the binder, I noticed all of the accessories which came with it:

Each set includes:

  • Five blank tabs (you can set up your own categories)
  • Vinyl pouch (store all of your extras like a calculator)
  • Notepad
  • Double sided pages to store coupons

I absolutely LOVED the pages!!!!  These ladies were really smart when they created this system.  If you print coupons often and use the standard baseball card sleeve, you know you have to fold them to get them to fit.  There are also times when the coupons in the weekly newspaper are large and you have to fold those too.

Just look at these!!  There are sizes for all types of coupons, so you don’t have to fold your coupons to make them fit!  How genius was this idea?

I have been using my Coupon Possible Binder for a couple of weeks.  It has taken me a bit of getting use to (only because it is different).  It is just so much easier for me to carry and the pages — I am just in love with those!!!

I am still able to open the binder right in my cart as usual.  I can still find the coupons easily (sometimes even more quickly due to the page layout).  I really am enjoying this binder and may even retire my big purple beast!!

If you don’t have a binder and want a good system, you might want to check these out.  You can order a 3/4″ or a 1″ binder (with accessories) starting at $18.99.  If you were to build a good binder yourself, you would absolutely pay more than that and the quality would not be as good as this one is.
